Working to Help New Jersey Breathe a Little Easier
Asthma is a serious and chronic disease marked by inflammation and bronchoconstriction in the airways. The Summit Medical Group Foundation (SMGF), the Boys & Girls Clubs of New Jersey and The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey are all working together to raise asthma awareness and help parents and children in communities of need in Bergen, Essex, Morris, Passaic and Union counties better manage the disease. In these communities, childhood asthma rates exceed the state average.
With your support and a generous $160,000 grant over two years from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, SMGF has been able to help the Boys & Girls Clubs of New Jersey expand its Breathe Easier Asthma Management program to include asthma screenings for 1,200 children, as well as parent education, case management and follow-up services. The goal of the joint initiative, Go! Asthma Action Program, is to help reduce the impact of undiagnosed or untreated asthma in low-income urban children in northern New Jersey. SMGF will also ensure children with asthma have a medical home and an Asthma Action Plan on file with their school nurse.
